A woman has received a multi-million dollar compensation from Apple after employees servicing her iPhone posted her images and videos online.
Explicit photographs and videos were shared on Facebook and other sites, and they were manipulated to appear as if they were posted by her.
Although Apple was not mentioned in the lawsuit, its involvement was discovered in a separate case.
It has finally acknowledged and apologised for the situation.
"We take the protection of the data of our clients extremely seriously, and we take a number of steps in place to guarantee that the data is safe during the repair process," Apple said in an announcement.
"We took fast action when we uncovered this flagrant violation of our regulations at one of our suppliers in 2016, and we have continued to improve our vendor standards since then," the statement said.
The event, which was first reported by the Telegraph, occurred five years ago when a University of Oregon student took her iPhone to Pegatron Technology Service, an Apple service contractor, for repair.
According to reports, Apple conducted an investigation and fired the two technicians involved.
However, it is said to have wanted anonymity, and its involvement in the case was only revealed following a legal battle between Pegatron and its insurers over compensation given to Apple.
In a similar incident in 2019, an Apple Store employee allegedly texted himself an intimate photo of a woman grabbed from her phone after she brought it in for repair.
Apple initiated an investigation right away and announced that the employee had left the firm.
The incident will bolster the growing Right to Repair campaign in the United States, which contends that products like iPhones should not be restricted to authorised repair businesses.
Right to Repair legislation has been proposed in 20 states, which would require Apple and other manufacturers to make tools and components available to third-party technicians.
