Apple appears to have put its ducks in a row and has acquired two more mini-LED panel manufacturers for the next 14" and 16" MacBook Pros. Osram Opto Semiconductors was inked earlier this month, and now Zhen Ding Technology and Tripod Technology have entered the supply chain, according to DigiTimes. Or, to put it another way, they extended their positions inside it.
Apple is already getting mini-LED backlight boards from Zhen Ding for the iPad Pro 12.9 (2021), the company's first tablet featuring a mini-LED display. According to reports, Zhen Ding is extending its production capacity in order to meet the increased demand from the MacBook orders.
Apple has authorised Tripod's manufacturing plant, which will begin producing backlight boards in the third quarter of this year. Tripod is also a part of Apple's mini-LED supply chain, which contributed to the creation of the new iPad Pro 12.9.
The 14" and 16" MacBook Pros with mini-LED displays are expected to ship in the second half of Q3, according to insiders. The most likely debut date is September.
The new laptops are rumoured to include a new M-series chipset, dubbed Apple M1X, with increased CPU and GPU core counts as well as a wider range of peripherals, such as more than two Thunderbolt connections, an HDMI port, an SD reader, and other features (including the return of the MagSafe connector).
