We now get a glimpse into Microsoft's ambitions for its famous operating system, which is used to power personal computers.
Microsoft announced Windows 11 on Thursday, the first major update to the platform since its predecessor, Windows 10, was released nearly six years ago.
Windows 11 has a sleeker interface and moves even closer to a mobile-friendly environment, as a result of changes in how PCs have been used as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced many Americans to work remotely.
In a blog post published Thursday, Panos Panay, Microsoft's chief product officer for Windows and devices, said, "What was so profound was the transition in the PC we saw and felt - from something practical and useful to something personal and emotional." "This is what motivated us to create the next iteration of Windows.
To provide a familiar environment for you, where you may create, study, play, and most importantly, connect in new ways."
The changes in Windows 11 coincide with CEO Satya Nadella's ambition to develop products that people would love, not just tolerate, according to Forrester analyst J.P. Gownder.
In an email to USA TODAY, Gowdner added, "Ultimately, Windows 11 will need to spend some time in the wild with people before determining its actual purpose and identity."
"However, a redesigned user interface and a slew of clever features give it a chance to stand out, especially given that its release coincides with the emergence of a new world of hybrid work."
This holiday season, Windows 11 will be offered as a free upgrade, and it will be available until 2022.
Windows 11 will be compatible with qualified Windows 10 PCs and new PCs, according to Microsoft. To see if your PC is suitable, use the company's PC Health Check software. Microsoft also stated that it is working with retail partners to guarantee that Windows 10 PCs that are currently on the market can be upgraded.
Apps for Android on Windows. Microsoft will offer some Android apps through a collaboration with Amazon's App Store, as seen by a brief TikTok promo during the company's event. However, there is one key caveat: Amazon's App Store does not have the same breadth of variety as, say, Google Play.
Panay described Amazon as a "wonderful partner" in an interview with USA TODAY following the event, saying that collaborating with them aligned with their aims while also allowing other marketplaces to participate.
"We're willing to shop at any store. That is something we sincerely desire, "Panay stated. "It all comes down to the customer. What are the best ways to get the proper apps for the clients that will be utilizing it?"
App layouts that snap together. With the introduction of Snap layouts, Microsoft placed a strong emphasis on multitasking. These layouts are adjusted to the size of your screen.
To improve productivity, users can spread out layouts in multiple configurations, such as side by side or even four at a time. On touch displays, pinching or spreading fingers out on a window will resize it. Snap configurations can also be used to arrange programs by topic, such as "work."
The docking process is now more fluid: Docking or undocking a computer and watching apps on another monitor vanish is a lot of fun. When you dock or undock programs in Windows 11, Microsoft claims you won't have to modify them.
There are a variety of typing possibilities available: Physical and on-screen keyboards are both available, but in one example using a Microsoft Surface, users may add a smartphone-size keyboard to the corner of the screen they use with one hand. If you don't want to use a keyboard, you can use voice typing.
Widgets: Widgets will be included in Windows 11 and will allow users to retrieve information such as weather, news, and other facts. To review all of their widgets, users can either open a full window or slide along one side of the screen.
The Microsoft Store has a new appearance: Aside from offering Android apps, the Microsoft Store receives a cleaner aesthetic that should result in speedier performance.
