WhatsApp is blocking 2 million users in India over 'spam message abuses'

WhatsApp is blocking 2 million users in India over 'spam message abuses'

In just one month, the firm located in the USA blocked nearly two million users in India for breach of its rules, according to India's controversial new restrictions on social media.

For what the firm deemed spam message abuses, most of the users were blacklisted.

In order to counteract misinformation, the corporation controlled by Facebook has limited mass forward messages.

In May, India introduced new regulations to control social media businesses, mandating them to make their efforts to monitor their platforms known every month.

"We continue to have increased skills to identify such accounts that transmit high or anomalous messages and prohibited two million accounts in India alone from 15 May to 15 June in the attempt to misuse this sort," Whats App stated on Thursday in its report.

The company says its "primary objective" is still to prevent dangerous and unwelcome content from spreading.

In India, which is one of its top markets, WhatsApp has more than 400 million people but has been criticized for the dissemination of misinformation.

Dozens of people in India were lynched in 2018 as WhatsApp rumors about youngsters robbing gangs started spreading.

The occurrences led the message app to prohibit bulk forward messages in India.

WhatsApp has tried to dispute the new laws for social media in court with certain Indian media companies.

The government is trying to suppress disagreements, criticism argues, but the government is trying to make social networks safer.

According to the laws, social media sites must share information about the "primary source" of positions considered to harm Indian sovereignty, state security or public order.

WhatsApp alleges that Indian privacy regulations are being violated by guidelines.
