Xiaomi has filed a patent for a foldable phone with a wraparound display similar to the Mi Mix Alpha

Xiaomi announced the Mi Mix Alpha in late 2019 with an unusual design that included a single screen that wrapped around the front, side, and back of the smartphone.

The Mi Mix Fold, the company's first foldable phone, was released earlier this year. What if a phone existed that integrated both of these designs?

Xiaomi had already explored this option and submitted a design patent last year, however the paperwork were just recently made public.

The device appears to be a hybrid of the Alpha and the Fold. It's essentially an inward folder, only the secondary screen on the outside is a piece of the primary panel that wraps around the side of one of the folding halves, rather than a distinct panel.

The thicker section that houses the cameras harkens back to the Alpha, which didn't have a "front" facing camera but didn't need one because the wraparound display allowed users to take selfies with the main camera.In any case, the phone was cancelled before it was released, so "would have allowed."

While launching the phone, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun stated that the wraparound display is difficult to build.

With the cancellation that followed, it's evident that it's a significant challenge to overcome. And that was without a folding mechanism to add to the complexity.

Xiaomi is rumoured to be working on a second foldable phone for Q4 - might this be it? Unlikely, in part because the report stated that the gadget will have two distinct screens, one with a 120 Hz Samsung panel and the other with a 90 Hz Visionox panel.

And partly due to the fact that such a device would be extremely difficult to construct (and thus more expensive than even current foldables).
