Xiaomi overtakes Apple as world's No 2 smartphone maker Samsung Retains Top Spot: Canalys Report

As vaccines were handed out over the world and the new normal for economies and citizens began to take shape in Q2 2021, global smartphone shipments surged by 12%. Samsung was the most popular smartphone maker, accounting for 19% of all units shipped. Xiaomi came in second place for the first time, with a share of 17%. Apple came in third place with 14%, while Vivo and Oppo rounded out the top five with substantial growth.

“Xiaomi is fast expanding its global business,” stated Ben Stanton, Canalys Research Manager. “For example, in Latin America, shipments climbed by more than 300 percent, in Africa by 150 percent, and in Western Europe by 50 percent. It also evolves as it expands.

It is now transitioning from a challenger to an incumbent business model, with activities such as channel partner consolidation and more careful open market management of older stock.

However, it is still mostly geared at the mass market, with an average selling price that is roughly 40% and 75% lower than Samsung and Apple, respectively. As a result, increasing sales of Xiaomi's high-end gadgets, such as the Mi 11 Ultra, is a top objective for the company this year.

It will be a tough fight, as both Oppo and Vivo have the same ambition and are willing to spend extensively on above-the-line marketing to promote their brands in a way that Xiaomi is not.

Despite the fact that all suppliers are fighting for component supply amid global shortages, Xiaomi is focused on the next prize: dethroning Samsung as the world's largest vendor.”
